WHAT IS IMAX70MM?
The ultimate theatre viewing format and experience.
It’s also extremely rare, with less than 20 theatres in the
US that offer it and less than 40 worldwide (these numbers
are based on the distribution of OPPENHEIMER in 2023).
IMAX70MM is a projection format based on film. That means
the movie is shot in film*, specifically 15/70MM.
The 15 comes from the number of sprockets, or perforations along the top and bottom of the film cell.
The 70 comes from the width of the film cell.
Thus, we have 15 perforations running along a 70mm long film cell.
15perf 70mm IMAX.
*some movies can be shot digitally and printed on 15/70mm film. DUNE PART 1 and DUNE PART 2 are examples. They were shot on Arri Alexa Mini LF’s, cameras capable of shooting in IMAX’s native aspect ratio of 1.43:1.
